Gayle's Community Involvement (Page 1)

June 16th 2007: Mayor Gayle McLaughlin leads the 2007 Juneteenth parade to Nichols Park, where the Juneteenth festival was held. The annual event was sponsored by the City of Richmond, City of San Pablo and many community organizations. Juneteenth is a celebration of African American freedom.

After leading the 2007 Juneteenth march to Nichols Park, Gayle addresses festival participants.

Juneteenth began on June 19, 1865, in Galveston, Texas, when Union soldiers arrived to enforce Lincoln's January 1, 1863 Emancipation Proclamation that freed all slaves. Texas had refused to free its slaves after the Civil War until forced to do so by armed Union Troops.

March 31, 2007: Mayor Gayle McLaughlin presides over Richmond Sol's 2007-season Soccer Start-up Day ceremonies for the at Nichols Park. Richmond Sol is a member of three national youth programs, the American Youth Soccer Organization, Boy Scouts of America, and US Club Soccer. This independent youth soccer and scouting program was founded in 2003 by Richmond resident Diego Garcia.



August 6, 2006: Gayle and husband, Paul Kilkenny, welcome Michael Berg (center) to the Bay Area. Michael Berg’s son, Nick, was abducted and killed in Iraq on May of 2004. Honored as a hero of forgiveness by the Worldwide Forgiveness Alliance, Michael has transformed his profound grief into a message of peace, forgiveness, no retaliation, and a call to end the war now!

On May 6, 2006, Gayle and supporters march in the Richmond Cinco de Mayo parade, bringing a message of peace: "Peace means respecting of the rights of others."
 



In the streets of Richmond, Gayle stands and marches against the federal anti-immigrant bill, HR443, on May 1, 2006. She wrote the Richmond City Council resolution that condemned this bill.
Gayle joins Fred Jackson and Antonio Medrano to speak at the Richmond Civic Center Plaza rally for Immigrant Rights on May 1, 2006. Across the nation, hundreds of other cities had similar protests.
