Posted on November 8, 2007 EAST BAY ROUNDUP Richmond Contra Costa Times CITY VOICES DISPLEASURE WITH WAR: The Richmond City Council has taken a stance against U.S. military involvement in Iraq and Iran. The council Tuesday night passed a resolution that states, in part, that the city will ask representatives in Congress to prohibit the use of money for military action against Iran without congressional authorization and request that state lawmakers back rapid troop withdrawal from Iraq. The vote was 8-0. Mayor Gayle McLaughlin initiated the resolution but abstained from the vote because she disagreed with a change the rest of the council wanted to make. [emphasis added] The change, proposed by Councilman John Marquez, was to add a sentence that Richmond appreciates and supports the men and women in uniform serving the country. The rest of the council concurred, but McLaughlin said the best way to show appreciation to the troops is to bring them home. -- Katherine Tam |
