(KCBS) -- Dozens of names were read during a small ceremony in Richmond last night, each connected to a homicide this year. ”We do have decades of structural violence to overcome,” said Richmond Mayor Gayle McLaughlin. “It goes way beyond Richmond. The structural violence comes in the form of decades of poverty, social injustice, lack of opportunity, neglect.” People at the ceremony sat in a circle sharing their memories and thoughts. With 43 deaths, Richmond’s homicide rate is at a 10 year high. Click here to hear the complete radio broadcast of this news report. |
