Richmond Mayor's Long-Term Proposal to Cut Violence

RICHMOND, Calif. (KCBS) -- The sudden spike of deadly shootings in Richmond has the mayor proposing a long-range strategy to combat the problem, and break the cycle of violence.

Richmond mayor Gayle McLaughlin cannot explain the rash of shootings that have left four people dead in separate incidents within 24-hours. But she's not alone. Police too are baffled. Still McLaughlin believes something can be done to change the direction the community is headed in.

”These are heart-breaking tragedies for our community. My heart goes out to all of those impacted by the recent violence in Richmond,” said McLaughlin. “We are facing this reality in Richmond, we face it every single day, and we know that it has deep roots. The way to get at these deep roots is to provide the opportunities that have not been provided for decades.”

She's proposing more job training centers, and more drug rehab, and youth recreation centers.

Richmond's homicide tally hasn't been this high since the early 1990's.
